Like the gentle rustling of wings, music whispers through the air. The flight of an angel? Throughout the ages, the human spirit has sought connection with messengers from otherworldly realms — bearers of wisdom, admonition, retribution, or solace. In a program full of captivating twists and turns, B’Rock brings together its Vocal Consort and chamber players with the extraordinary French mezzo Lucile Richardot. Seraphim mixes sounds from the early Middle Ages all the way to the present day. Hildegard von Bingen’s ode to the Creator echoes in Gubaidulina’s Engel on poetry by Else Lasker-Schüler, lush Romantic opulence by Louise Farrenc and Lili Boulanger glows side by side with baroque splendor from the Italian convents.

Martine Argellies has been a harpsichord maker since 1981. Her workshop, located in Montpellier, is one of the last in France specializing in harpsichord production. Her passion for the Baroque musical repertoire—of which the harpsichord, with its pedal-free and plucked-string design, is a key emblem—along with her love for craftsmanship, guided her career choices.

In her late teens, she joined a friend who owned a piano shop. She then studied with a cabinetmaker before teaching herself the craft over a decade. Together with the two team members who now work alongside her, she produces about a dozen instruments per year, a quarter of which are destined for export.
