Hamburger Ratsmusik Germany
KomponistenQuartier Hamburg, Lichtwarksaal, Neanderstrasse 22, 20459 Hamburg
The richness of Telemann's compositional ideas is inexhaustible. Unlike all his colleagues of his time, he never repeats himself, always reinventing himself. In his fantasies and sonatas on this concert evening, the transverse flute, viola da gamba, lute and harpsichord compete with each other. The Ratsmusiker have invited the American flautist, musicologist and Telemann prizewinner and expert Steven Zohn. With him in the trio, Telemann's music becomes a transatlantic adventure.
Johann Sebastian Bach's birthday on 21 March marks the beginning of spring, as it does every year. Exactly one week earlier, on 14 March, is the 343rd anniversary of Telemann's birthday. What better way to celebrate this coincidence than with this concert in the Lichtwarksaal and the already institutional glass of champagne?!

Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Oberstenfeld Germany

Our current programme is dedicated to Leipzig's rich and extraordinarily creative music scene of the 17th century. Inspired by Heinrich Schütz, who studied with Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice from 1609 to 1612 and cultivated a special relationship with Italy throughout his life, a new style of composition developed, particularly among the St Thomas cantors of the time. The "Madrigale Spirituale" skilfully combined the original tonal language of sacred motets by German Baroque composers with the contrasting polyphony of the Italian madrigal style. We illustrate this dynamic development by juxtaposing works by the St Thomas cantors Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630), Tobias Michael (1592-1657), Johann Schelle (1648-1701) and Johann Rosenmüller (1619-1684) as well as their contemporaries Melchior Frank (1580-1639) and Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672).

'A Divine Hope' - Dante's journey from Inferno to Paradise On-site

Stile Antico United Kingdom
Wigmore Hall, 35 Wigmore Street , W1U 2BP London
Dante Alighieri’s Commedia (‘The Divine Comedy’) is considered one of the greatest works of literature ever written. Its imagery has shaped Western understanding of the afterlife for more than seven centuries, and inspired an immense body of scholarship, philosophy, art, and music.

Telling Dante’s story, Stile Antico descends with Il Divino into Hell, journeys with him through Purgatory, and finally arrives at the gates of Heaven. Renaissance madrigals and sacred music by composers such as Palestrina, Guerrero and Morales illustrate the way, setting to music prayers which the poet features in his epic verse. Texts by Dante himself, set to music by Luzzaschi and Merulo, also narrate the story. These are punctuated by readings from the Divine Comedy. At the pinnacle of heaven we meet the Virgin Mary in Victoria’s glorious 12-part Magnificat.
