This is the first of a series of three mini leture recitals, published during the Early Music Month with the aim of shedding light to the importance of women from varied social spheres who collected keyboard music and/or transcribed manuscripts in Iberia and Latin America in the 18th century, which serve nowadays as a source for understanding the cultural transfer that occurred between the two continents. I will present musical selections performed on historical keyboards from the following compilations: the library of the Portuguese-Spanish Queen Maria Barbara; the manuscript owned by a Chilean black woman slave known as “Libro Sesto de Maria Antonia Palacios”; and the compilation named “Quaderno Mayner” for the use of Sra. Maria Guadalupe Mayner from Mexico, of unknown origin.

Into the Melting Pot: stories of women, their plaintive songs and Spanish medieval music in Spain 1492 Online

The Telling United Kingdom
168 Percy Road, Twickenham, London
★★★★ "an inspiring, affirming and powerful piece of writing (and my favourite so far of The Telling’s work)"
LouReviews, Louise Penn October 2022

The film adaption of the concertplay (where music and theatre collide) written by Clare Norburn and directed by BAFTA-nominated Nicholas Renton.

Spain, 1492. At twilight on her final night in Seville, a Jewish woman, played by Suzanne Ahmet (@sohoplace, The King’s Head Theatre, Chester Storyhouse), lights the lamps. She is being forced to leave Spain and set sail for an uncertain future. Her story echoes down the ages to the personal stories of people affected by politics and war today. She tunes into voices of a community of Jewish, Christian and Muslim women from across the Spanish peninsula.
Down the centuries, women’s stories of integration, love, the rich cultural heritage of the Spanish peninsula and racial intolerance are played out to a soundtrack of plaintive Sephardic songs and lively medieval music performed by The Telling. Be transported back to 15th-century Seville!

A never-ending art: "Lemniscate" - The Art of Fugue

A never-ending art: "Lemniscate" - The Art of Fugue Online

New Collegium Netherlands
Westvest 90, Schiedam
For the 2023 Early Music Day, New Collegium releases a new and final video of its latest CD, "Lemniscate".
Surrounded by a certain air of mystery and revered as a relic, The Art of Fugue is roundly praised for its complex, mathematical nature. However, these works are also movingly lyrical, and deserve to be enjoyed for their pure beauty, just as one enjoys the rhythms and sounds in the words of a poem, regardless of form and sometimes even meaning. Following the last version of J.S. Bach's autograph manuscript, New Collegium champions in "Lemniscate" the reconciliation and celebration of all these aspects, bringing to the fore both the cerebral brilliance as well as the emotive intensity of this iconic masterpiece, allowing it to be both light and profound. The rich instrumentation of woodwinds, brass, strings and harpsichord allows for expressive characters to be exaggerated, hints at other musical styles, and paints diverse atmospheres, infusing fantasy and life into these twenty fugues and canons.
